Gaisce – The President’s Award - Ceremony May 2010
Leinster's most capped player and former international Irish rugby player, Shane Byrne presented Gaisce awards to pupils from several midlands schools and youth projects including a large number of pupils from Wilson’s Hospital School. A total of fourteen pupils from Wilsons received their silver awards Thirty four Wilson’s pupils earned their bronze awards.The ceremony was held in the Kilmore Hotel, Cavan on 25th May 2010.
Gaisce - the President’s Award is Ireland’s National Challenge Award, the country’s most prestigious and respected individual award programme, and a challenge from the President of Ireland, to young people between 15 and 25 years of age. The four challenge areas are: Community Involvement; Personal Skill; Physical Recreation and Adventure Journey.
Wilson’s pupil, Eoin, was selected to make a speech explaining the various challenges he undertook for his silver award including singing with the school Choir, taking guitar lessons, learning to play basketball to a competitive level and planning and undertaking a hike between 50 and 70 km. He was commended for his speech which was well received by the 350 people who enjoyed the ceremony. Click here to read a copy of Eoin’s speech.
